## The Busiest Sea Port in the World

A common question we see in the world of shipping is “What is the busiest sea port in the world?” The size and scope of the shipping industry is hard to comprehend, which is why working with an expert is so helpful for businesses. Currently, the busiest sea port in the world is the Port of Shanghai (according to [Marine Insight](https://www.marineinsight.com/ports/top-10-busiest-ports-in-the-world/)). This designation is based on how much container traffic passes through the port each day, which means that the biggest ports are not always the busiest. Located conveniently at the River Yangtze and the East China Sea, this port comprises a deep-sea port and a river port. In total, it covers an area of 1,397.5 square miles! Shanghai bested the Port of Singapore for the busiest port title in 2019, handling 37.1 MILLION TEUs of cargo volume and is considered the world’s fastest growing economy. About 2,000 container ships depart from the Port of Shanghai every month.

### Understanding Sea Ports

Sea ports are locations where ocean freight originates, transfers, or arrives. Put simply, ocean freight is the transport of goods, raw materials, and commodities via the world’s oceans and waterways. [Over 90%](https://business.un.org/en/entities/13) of the world’s goods travel over the oceans. Without sea freight, the world’s economy would come to a screeching halt – there would be no electronic products, manufacturers would have no raw materials, and store shelves would be half empty.
